Photography : An Introduction

Photography is an art and process of creating still or moving pictures by the recording of the radiations on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as photographic film or on an electronic sensor. Photography is the technique of recording and generating permanent images, by capturing and preserving the physical object-patterns of a layer of photosensitive material. This process is generally done through mechanical, chemical and digital devices commonly known as camera. Photos are an essential part in both print and electronic media. So there is greater scope available for those who have interest in making their career in professional photography.

Photographs can be processed in two ways. Black and White, all of the photography was originally black and white or called monochrome. After the introduction of color photography still the black and white continue to dominate over it for decades, due to its lower cost and its “classic” photographic look. It is important to note that some monochromatic photographs are not always pure blacks and whites, but also demands some contrasts depending upon the process.

Color, photography was first explored in the mid of eighteenth century. The first permanent color photograph was taken in 1861. in early times the photographer tends to use three cameras for taking color photos. Each camera possesses color filters in the front of the lens. In such the image has to underwent into three processes in a darkroom. Color photography may form images as a positive transparency, intended for use in a slide projector.

There are various purposes keeping in mind one could engage himself into photography profession. Amateur photography, such photography reflects one's hobby about taking pictures. Its just for fun not for selling and all that, means no business motive involved. The quality of some amateur work is comparable to that of many professionals and may be highly specialized or eclectic in its choice of subjects. Commercial photography, is probably best defined as any photography for which the photographer is paid for images he has taken. In this light money could be paid for the subject of the photograph or the photograph itself.

Modern photography has raised a number of concerns on its impact on society. Although the camera is an observation station, the act of photographing is more than passive observing. Photography is one of the new media forms that changes perception and changes the structure of society. Tourism and photography combine to create a "tourist gaze" in which local inhabitants are positioned and defined by the camera lens. However, it has also been argued that there exists a "reverse gaze" through which indigenous photographees can position the tourist photographer as a shallow consumer of images.
